~What our family does to save money-Tips you too could follow to save BIG~
There is no doubt that almost everyone is trying to save money these days one way another. I like to think my husband, and I do a good job at cutting costs without too much sacrifice. Today I am going to talk about how we save money.
Utilities-We try to wash our clothes at off peak electric hours, I have only started doing this recently, but have seen a huge difference reflected in our first bill. We also line dry in the spring/summer.
My husband and I also take advantage of cooking our food on our outdoor grill in the warmer months. The food tastes much better and it saves a ton of electric!
This winter we also installed two thermostats in our home, and set them to an average of 67 degrees this. Our home was comfortable and not overbearingly warm -plus we had low gas heating costs!
As far a phone service goes we have been members of Vonage VOIP service for 7 years. When we were moving I threatened to cancel and they brought my bill down to $12.99 unlimited local/long distance-with taxes it comes to about $20.00! That’s a steal for this plan!
Clothing-I buy my kids clothing off season at ridiculously cheap prices, and store them for the next season. My rule of thumb is to spend no more than $15.00 on shoes, $10.00 on jeans, and $5.00 on shirts. Most of the time I get each item I described for half off my expectation price! Target and Kohl’s, TJ Maxx, and Marshalls are all my favorite stores to shop for clothing at. We also hand my oldest daughter’s clothing down to her sister who usually wears them out.
Leisure-We don’t exactly have a huge budget for this, but we make sure that we bring our kids to an amusement park at least once a year. The way gas prices are this year we hope we can still do this, but I did set aside some tax money to do so…
Dining- My husband and are blessed to be able to have a weekly date night where my wonderful mother in law take the kids for 3 or so hours. This helps greatly in maintain our sanity, and relationship. We try to always use coupons for free appetizers, percentages off, and we order specials. Of course you could save even more money by eating home cooked meals.
Spending money- We set aside x amount each week for ourselves and if we run out that’s it until next pay. This has worked greatly at saving us money, and stretching our buck.
We also use coupons for practically EVERYTHING we buy in one way or another. From tools, to dining to diapers-we use coupons!!
Credit- We are fortunate enough to just have a home and car loan debt. We only charge what money we have for an item. The reason we charge is to rake in membership award points to cash in for gift cards, or cool prizes.
DIY Projects- My husband was truly blessed with a highly functional brain (lol). He can read a blueprint, or make a blueprint, and build what he sees in his mind. He made me beautiful window boxes, plants our own flowers, and garden (this year). There is nothing can’t do, and yes- he even goes as far as cutting his own hair, and he gives it style-it is not just a buzz cut.
Car maintenance- My husband fixes practically any problem that arises (except ties/exhaust), and also does our car maintenance like oil changes, and brakes. Just in this department alone we have saved thousands.
I am sure there are thousands more things you could do to save money, but the list goes on. What are some of the thing you do to save your hard earned cash?
